The law firm of Godwin, Erlandson, MacLaughlin, Vernon & Daney, LLC was created for two reasons.  First, to allow its practitioners to broaden their representation of businesses in the defense of their personal injury, product liability, insurance coverage and workers' compensation disputes.  Second, the firm has brought together a unique group of experienced attorneys to address the growing corporate problem of managing litigation risk locally, regionally, and nationally in our increasingly diverse society. 
   
    The firm has two former Presidents of the Maryland Defense Counsel, Bob Erlandson and Harold MacLaughlin.  The MDC is a group of more than 600 civil defense attorneys dedicated to protecting the integrity and fairness of the civil justice system.  
 
    GEMV&D is the only defense firm in Maryland to have two former Workers Compensation Commissioners in practice:  Dave Godwin has resumed his former active litigation practice emphasizing local, regional, and national corporate litigation risk programs;  Rick LaFata spent 13 years as a Maryland Workers’ Compensation Commissioner and is an adjunct professor at the University of Baltimore Law School.
